Germantown, MD - History in the Making
While unincorporated, Germantown is an urbanized town located in Montgomery County, Maryland and is the 6 th most populous Census Designated place in Maryland. If it were to incorporate, it would be the second largest city in Maryland!
During the 1830s and the 1840s, many immigrants from Germany, German business owners and others relocating from Pennsylvania settled at the intersection of what is now known and Liberty Mill and Clopper. While the landowners and farmers were mostly English, travelers remembered the accents of shop-owners and businessmen and started calling the area Germantown - the name stuck! There are actually 3 other areas in Maryland named Germantown - one each in Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Worcester counties - only Germantown, located in Montgomery County, Maryland is recognized by the United States Postal Service.
Germantown is right off of the Interstate 270 and sits just north by northeast of Gaithersburg. At the corner of Liberty Mill Road and Mateny Hill Road lies the MARC train station. Appointed head architect for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1872, E. Francis Baldwin spent the next 25 years designing B&O's stations and structures, including many of its most famous buildings. One of the most famous is the passenger car shop located in Baltimore, Maryland that is now part of the B&O Railroad Museum. Other surviving stations designed by Baldwin can be found in many cities in Maryland. The Germantown station was destroyed by arson in 1978 and is a reconstruction.
Germantown has in recent years experienced tremendous growth and will probably continue its growth into the
future. As is the same case in Gaithersburg, the scientific communities have found a home in Germantown, located along the Interstate 270 Corridor and providing a quick commute for those who choose to call Upper Montgomery County home.
In fact, one of the leaders of DNA testing, OrchidCellmark (formerly Cellmark Diagnostics) calls Germantown home and became the first company to offer criminal offender DNA databasing services to state law enforcement agencies. It also became the first private forensic testing laboratory to donate a criminal case file to the Smithsonian Institution (the OJ Simpson case).
